Researchers Find Evidence Suggesting That Coronavirus Can Cause Type 2 Diabetes

A group of scientists from Monash University and King’s College London has developed a database of information that may help researchers find the link between type 2 diabetes and the coronavirus. The group designed the database for the following reasons: first, the increasing evidence that suggests that the coronavirus can actually cause individuals to become diabetic, and second, when compared to the general population, individuals who have type 2 diabetes are more likely to experience serious coronavirus symptoms and to die from the disease. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that impacts the way the body processes blood sugar.

The database, dubbed the COVIDIAB registry, has been created to assist medical researchers to understand the association between diabetes and the coronavirus. The data that was gathered from patients included whether the diagnoses were new onset. The researchers suggest that the amount of data will increase as researchers learn more about the effect of the coronavirus on patients of diabetes. A couple of media outlets have revealed that the platform already has information from 350 doctors.

It still isn’t clear if the coronavirus does actually cause diabetes and neither is it clear why individuals who have diabetes experience more severe symptoms when they contract the coronavirus. Since the pandemic began, doctors have made reports that patients developed diabetes shortly after getting infected with the coronavirus.

Researchers are hopeful that the database would assist them in finding out if the complications caused by the coronavirus can bring about the onset of diabetes. Physicians will also need to know whether these coronavirus patients were prediabetic and the coronavirus infection triggered the disease, if they were going to develop diabetes in the future anyway, or if it is possible for individuals who have no propensity to becoming diabetic to develop the ailment soon after contracting the coronavirus.

Additionally, some researchers also revealed that there are two potential ways that the coronavirus could cause an individual to develop type 2 diabetes. The first way could occur as the coronavirus triggers an inflammatory reaction in an individual’s body, which affects blood sugar regulation because of the stress hormones that are released. The second way is when the pancreas is attacked, which leads to a decrease in the organ’s ability to produce and regulate levels of insulin in an individual’s body.

Researchers have also claimed that it is possible that some individuals may have developed diabetes after having steroids administered to them as part of their coronavirus treatment. The study will clarify all these issues.
