A report recently released by Medscape shows that more than 40% of physicians in the United States suffer from burnout. Burnout not only affects individuals emotionally but also impacts finances negatively, with data from the American Medical Association showing that burnout costs healthcare organizations $500,000 to $1 million per physician.
The cost of burnout also includes indirect costs such as decreased patient satisfaction, lost patient care revenue, higher risk of malpractice suits, medical errors and damage to the reputation of the healthcare organization. The pandemic has only made things worse, with stress becoming a severe issue for doctors these last few years.
Nuance Communications Dr. Robert Budman states that having a way to promote wellness while dealing with stress in the workplace is the responsibility of every organization. Budman revealed that the use of various artificial intelligence (“AI”) technologies in healthcare organizations could alleviate physician stress by helping with the practical details of running a healthcare business.
For instance, AI technologies can predict bed turnover and forecast emergency department or nursing staff needs. Healthcare organizations can also use these technologies to address frustrations with clinical documentation, as doctors sometimes fail to note down all comorbidities, chronic conditions and secondary diagnoses when treating a patient.
Missed diagnoses may lead to reductions in reimbursement or set in motion enquiries and reviews about a particular case, which is why these situations need to be avoided as much as possible. A workflow-integrated computer-assisted physician documentation (“CAPD”) system is an example of an AI technology that healthcare organizations can use. This AI-driven system allows physicians to focus on patient care by offering guidance on what information is needed to ensure clinical documentation integrity.
Budman notes that this system can also address documentation mandates from insurance firms and government bodies, as doctors can simply produce clinical notes using AI-generated advice. In addition, CAPD systems also allow physicians to capture ailment severity, which ensures that they receive the proper reimbursement for all outpatient and inpatient care that’s delivered.
For instance, if a physician treats a patient for heart failure and diabetes but forgets to capture their symptoms of arthritis or chronic renal failure, this will impact the accuracy of the patient’s medical record. However, if a physician can quickly capture information about a patient using the system, they can produce the documentation required to receive the right reimbursement.
Furthermore, the CAPD system can also be used to improve workflow in healthcare organizations by eliminating extra tasks that providers have to deal with. As companies such as RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH), which specializes in enabling the switch to digital healthcare, increase in number, we will see more technologies that take the hassle out of many tasks in the course of offering healthcare to patients.
